INDIANS PROMOTE OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA & RHP FRANK HERRMANN FROM AAA COLUMBUS
CLEVELAND, OH—The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have recalled
OF EZEQUIELCARRERA and RHP FRANK HERRMANN from AAA Columbus.The Indians have also placed DH TRAVIS HAFNER (strained right oblique) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 18, and optioned INF LUIS VALBUENA to AAA Columbus.Carrera, 23, has spent the entire 2011 to date with the AAA Columbus Clippers after being optioned toColumbus on March 25. Thus far he has hit .317 (45-142) with 33 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2HR and 17RBI in 37 games for the Clippers and has stolen 15 bases in 17 attempts (2CS were pickoffs). Since April 29 he is batting .351 (27-77) with 17 runs scored, 3 doubles, a triple, 2HR and 12RBI over his last 19 games. Carrera iscurrently tied for the International League in runs scored (33), is 2nd in stolen bases (15), 8th in on-base percentage(.401), T8th in hits (45) and 10th in the league in average (.317).
A native of Guiria, Venezuela, Carrera was acquired by the Indians on June 27 of last year from the Seattle Mariners along with INF Juan Diaz for INF Russell Branyan. Following the trade, he hit .286 (46-161) with 19 runs scored, 7 doubles, 3 triples, a HR and 16 RBI in 41 games at AAA Columbus while going 11-14 in stolen base attempts. Carrera was originally signed by the New York Mets in 2005 as a minor league free agent and was obtained by the Mariners from the Mets in 2008 as part of a three-team trade among the Mets, Mariners & Indians (received Valbuena & J. Smith). Carrera will be in uniform tonight for the Indians as they take on the Cincinnati Reds in Progressive Field at 7:05PM ET. He will wear #12 and is making his debut at the Major League level. Herrmann begins his 4th stint with the Indians in 2011 where he is 0-0 w/a 8.31 ERA (4.1IP,6H, 5R/4ER, BB, 7K, .300 avg) in 4 relief appearances. He was previously at the big league level from April 1-13, April 28-29 and again from May 10-11. Between stints in Cleveland he has recorded no decisions with a 5.91 ERA (10.2IP,13H, 7R/ER, 4BB, 12K, .310 avg) in 9 relief appearances at AAA Columbus. He wears #56.
Hafner was pulled from the lineup before the game of May 18 at Chicago-AL after feeling discomfort in his right rib cage area during batting practice. So far this season he is hitting .345 (39-113) with 8 doubles, 5HR and 22 RBI in 32 games (.409OB/.549SLG/.958OPS). He is currently 3rd in the American League in batting average, 4th in on-base % and 5th in slugging %. Today marks his 6th career stint on the Major League DL. He is eligible to come off on June 2nd
Valbuena was recalled by the Indians yesterday and did not appear in last night’s 8-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

FROM AAA COLUMBUS
RHP JEANMAR GOMEZ from AAA Columbus. To allow room on the 25-man roster, the Indians have optioned OF TRAVIS BUCK to AAA Columbus. Gomez will start tonight for the Indians against the Kansas City Royals at 8:10PM ET in Kauffman Stadium.
Gomez, 23, went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA (12.2IP, 15H, 2R/ER, 3BB, 11K) in 2 starts at AAA Columbus so far this year. In his last start of April 14th at Toledo, he tossed a 7.0 inning complete game 8-hit shutout (BB, 7K) in a Clippers 1-0 victory. Gomez was optioned to AAA Columbus out of spring training on March 25th after going 0-1 w/a 5.50 ERA (18.0IP, 17H, 11R/ER, 7BB, 14K) in 6 games/2 starts, while competing for the final spot in the Indians rotation. Last year, he made his Major League debut and totaled 11 starts for the Indians going 4-5 with a 4.68 ERA (57.2IP, 73H, 36R/30ER, 22BB, 34K) while ending the season in the Tribe rotation. He wears #58.
Buck made the Indians Opening Day roster after being signed to a minor league contract with a spring invite on December 21, 2010. In 10 games with the Indians this year, he hit .241 (7-29) with 4 runs scored, 3 doubles and 2 RBI.
