INF Matt LaPorta Optioned to AAA Columbus

CLEVELAND, OH  – The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has recalled RHP JEANMAR GOMEZ from AAA Columbus.  To allow room on the 25-man roster the Indians have optioned INF MATT LaPORTA to AAA Columbus.

Gomez, 23, has spent the majority of the season in Columbus where he has gone 10-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 21 starts (2CG, 137.2IP, 123H, 39ER, 49BB, 107K, .242AVG).  He is currently 2^nd among International League pitchers in ERA (2.55), is tied for 5th in wins (10), 10th in WHIP (1.25), tied for 15th in innings pitched (137.2) & 15th in strikeouts (107). He was also selected to the IL All-Star Team. The right-handed Venezuelan has also gone 0-2 w/a 5.70 ERA in 5 games/4 starts (23.2IP, 34H, 15ER, 4HR, 5BB, 11K, .330AVG) over two stints with Cleveland this year from April 19-May 5 and again on July 17.  He starts tonight against the Oakland A’s. He wears #58.

LaPorta has spent the entire season to date with Cleveland, hitting .238 (76-319) with 18 2B, 1 3B, 11HR & 44 RBI in 97 games.
